The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, sometimes referred to as IIT Bombay or IIT Mumbai, is a deemed university and autonomous institution situated in Bombay's Powai district that was established in 1958. Because of its stellar placement history, 75% JEE Advanced top rankers select IIT Bombay, making it the most popular IIT. The AICTE and UGC both recognize IIT Mumbai. IITB is ranked 3rd in the Engineering category of the NIRF Ranking 2023. According to the QS World University Ranking 2024, IIT Bombay is rated 149th out of the Top Global Universities.

 While Indian Institute of Technology Bombay offers M.Tech, M.Tech + Ph.D., M.Des, MBA, MA + Ph.D., M.Sc + Ph.D., and other PG degrees, it also offers B.Tech, B.Tech + M.Tech, B.Sc, and B.Des at UG level. Admission 2024 at University

University Admission 2024 is now open. It accepts national-level entrance exams, including JEE-Main, JEE-Advanced, GATE, CEED, MET (M.Phil. Entrance Test), IIT JAM, and CAT Scores for admission to its various courses. JEE-Main, JEE-Advanced, and JoSAA Counseling are the most popular courses at university.

  • For admission to its B.Tech program, IITB accepts JEE-Main, JEE-Advanced, and JoSAA Counseling.
  • For M.Tech admissions, IITB accepts a valid GATE Score + COAP Counseling, followed by a Written Test and/or Interview.
  • Similarly, IIT Mumbai accepts valid CAT scores for MBA admission, followed by a Group Discussion & Interview Round.
  • For admission to the B.Des and M.Des programs, the institute uses UCEED and CEED scores.
  • For Ph.D. admission, scores from the GATE, UGC-NET, CSIR-NET, ICAR, or ICMR are accepted after a written exam and interview. IITB accepts applications for Ph.D. admission all year long. They are processed twice a year, however, during the spring semester (January session) and the autumn semester (July session).

 Scholarships 2024 for Students

There are various scholarships available in Bombay, including PG Assistantships, MS Scholarships, Teaching Assistantships for Dual Degree Programs, and Undergraduate Scholarships, provided you meet the requirements. Institute cum Merit Scholarships, Remission of Fees, Names Scholarships/Private Scholarships, National Scholarships, and National Talent Search Scholarships are the main IIT Bombay Scholarships listed in the UG Scholarships section.

The following are some of the most well-liked scholarship programs that university and other private scholarships offer.

Merit Cum Means Scholarship (Institute Scholarship):    The Merit Cum Means Scholarship is awarded to the new entrants based on their JEE AIR rank and the candidates whose annual family income is less than INR 4.5 lakhs. A free tuition fee of INR 25,000 per semester is awarded in the Merit Cum Means scholarship along with a benefit of INR 1000 per month to maximum 25% UG students. All the SC/ST Students are exempted from payment of tuition fees and are allowed to avail the facility of free messing along with a pocket allowance of INR 250 per month.

IIT Bombay Heritage Fund Scholarship:    The IIT Bombay Heritage Fund has been created by the Alumni of IIT Bombay in the USA, which collects donations from the alumni for the institution of scholarships at IIT Bombay. The students wishing to apply for the IIT Bombay Heritage Fund Scholarship should have a parental annual income from all sources that do not exceed INR 5 lakhs. 

Dr. Burjor Godrej Scholarship:    IIT Bombay offers two Dr. Burjor Godrej Merit Scholarships of INR 5000 per month, six Dr. Burjor Godrej Merit Cum Means Scholarships of INR 2000 per month, and ten Prof. MV Pandya Merit Cum Means Scholarships of INR 1000 per month. The above-mentioned scholarships are available to the students admitted to the M.Sc. Chemistry Programmes at IIT Bombay. The criterion for the Dr. Burjor Godrej Scholarship is the highest SPI scored by the students of the M.Sc programs.

Aditya Birla Scholarship:    The Aditya Birla Scholarship covers the entire course and scholars are rewarded with INR 65,000 per annum. However, the performance of the students is closely monitored for the renewal of awards every year. The performance assessment criteria for the Aditya Birla Scholars are based on qualitative and quantitative parameters. To be eligible for renewal of the Aditya Birla Scholarship, a candidate should be in the top 25% of his/her batch and must have a rating of at least 7 on the 9-point scale during the course work.

Facilities at University

library:    IIT Bombay Central Library is a four-storied building with a carpet area of over 63,000 sft. and is located towards the North of the Main building. The extensive library at University enables staff and students to research the most recent findings in their fields of study.  It has a total collection of 4.40 lakh items that comprises 2,53,504 Books, Theses, CDs & Videos, 21,403 E-Books, 12,203 TLL & BC (Book Bank) Collection, 1,19,576 Bound Volumes of Journals, 67,931 Reports, Pamphlets & Standards, 4,417 Photocopies, 37,00,000+ Journals (Print, Online) & 36,247 IITB Repositories. 

Computer Center:    The university's computer center houses roughly 100 PCs. Many PCs at the center have access to high-speed internet at 2 Mbps speed.

Conference  Hall:    There are several AC meeting rooms at the university that can hold over 100 students.

Hostels:    IITB Campus comprises 17 hostels for students. Each hostel is an independent entity with its mess facilities, recreational areas, etc. The hostel fee at IIT Bombay is INR 17,250. 

Sports:   The inistute caters to a wide range of sports activities like badminton, table tennis, chess, yoga, basketball, football, hockey, volleyball and more for students for internal and external participation. These sports facilities are organized and overseen by students, but they are also open to faculty and staff members.

Event Venues:    IITB has variety of venues suitable for different purposes, including lectures, seminars, conferences, and personal events. Some of these venues include Victor Menezes Convention Center (VMCC), Lecture Halls, Auditoriums & venues for personal/official events.
