Established as the Central University Educational Institute in 1994, the university includes 3 permanent campuses and one temporary campus, with its headquarters located in Lumami, Zunheboto. 11 departments and 2 centers are located at the Meriema campus, 12 departments are located at the Medziphema campus, 5 departments are placed at the temporary campus in Dimapur, and thirteen departments and 4 centers are located in Lumami, Zunheboto. According to NIRF 2020, University has an overall ranking of 151 and has received clearance from the UGC. Presently, 65 colleges from all around the state of Nagaland are affiliated with University.

Minimum 12th level exam in the relevant stream from an accredited Board or its equivalent is required for all UG level programs. Hostel:   University offers 5 female hostels (4 for PG students and 1 for research scholars) and 4 male hostels (three for PG students and one for research scholars).
